Dysport® is similar to BOTOX®, the market leader in neuromodulators. In the case of Dysport, a purified protein (serum albumin) is added before it is bottled and freeze-dried. It is reconstituted with a sterile saline solution. This causes Dysport to have less of a protein load than regular BOTOX and it offers more diffusion than BOTOX, which can be advantageous in certain areas.

Dermatologists have noticed that Dysport targets such problems as frown lines, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifically approved it for correcting these types wrinkles. Dysport is also used to soften the lines in other areas of the face, including bands in the neck, bunny lines in the nose, crow’s feet, marionette lines and the tiny wrinkles that develop around the lip, causing the lipstick to bleed.

How Dysport Works

Dysport works similarly to BOTOX. When it is injected into a muscle beneath a line or wrinkle, it relaxes the muscle. It happens gradually, over the course of a week or 10 days. Because the muscle is relaxed, it cannot position the skin the way it used to when it was forming the wrinkle, the wrinkle eventually smooths out. The effects of any neuromodulator lasts anywhere from two to eight months, and some experts claim that Dysport® acts more rapidly than regular BOTOX. Eventually, the nerves that control the muscles regain their ability to receive neurotransmitter signals, but when used over time, many patients claim that the wrinkle is never as deep as it was initially. To maintain this effect, clients return for maintenance treatments.

How Dysport is Administered

Dysport is administered right in our office. The insulin type needles are so fine that most clients do not need topical anesthesia, though we offer it to all our patients. During the session, we may ask the patient to tighten the muscle in the area of treatment to help guide the needle. The length of each Dysport session may vary depending on how much area of the face needs to be treated.
